Do Personalised Number Plates Affect Insurance?

If you’re buying a personalised registration plate for your car but are concerned about how it might affect your car insurance, there is no need to keep searching for answers. We’ve got all the information on personalised number plates and car insurance.

At Mr Plates, we are a DVLA-approved company that handcrafts MOT and road-friendly registration number plates. We have a wide range of registration plate options that will be your first choice.

First Things First: What Are The Rules For Personalised Number Plates?

When you are deciding on your personalised number plate, you will first need to understand the DLVA standards and rules. All of our personalised number plates from Mr Plates are road-legal in the UK, provided that they adhere to DVLA standards. This includes:

  • The correct font is Charles Wright 2001.
  • Correct spacing between each character.
  • The front plate should be a white background with black characters.
  • The rear plate should have a yellow background.
  • The supplier’s name, postcode, and manufacturer’s mark should be legible.

How To Register A Personalised Number Plate

Once you have purchased your personalised number plate, you will need to register this with the DVLA. We’ve created an easy-to-understand checklist below:

  • Immediate assignment: If your vehicle doesn’t need inspection for transfer, you can assign your personalised number plate immediately after applying online.
  • DVLA approval: The DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) will issue you with a certificate of entitlement (V750/V778) once your personalised plate has been retained.
  • Number plate supplier: You’ll need to take your certificate of entitlement and proof of identity to a number plate supplier to ensure that your personalised number plate has been fitted and made correctly.

New V5C: You will receive a new V5C registration certificate showing the new personalised number plate, and you’ll need to inform your insurance company of the change.

Do Personalised Number Plates Increase Insurance?

Now that you have informed your insurance company of your number plate change, you will be wondering, ‘Will my insurance increase?’ The answer is no!

In most cases, a custom number plate does not increase your car insurance premium. Insurers will consider the price of your car insurance policy on factors such as:

  • Driving history
  • Age
  • Vehicle model & make

While personalised number plates are considered a vehicle modification, it is not generally considered a significant risk that would cause a higher insurance cost. However, we would recommend that when you are informing your insurance provider of a change, you should ask for clarification on how it might affect your car insurance.

What Factors Can Increase Your Car Insurance?

Now that you know that custom number plates do not affect your insurance premium, we’ve created a list of modifications and factors that would increase your car insurance cost:

  • Age
  • Gender
  • Location
  • Driving record
  • Vehicle model & make
  • Credit score
  • Annual mileage
  • Insurance claims history
